Discipleship Is a Call — Not a Concept

Discipleship is not a class. It’s not a Sunday routine. It’s not a set of nice ideas you can think about on the drive to work. Discipleship is a call to live differently — to follow Jesus in a way that transforms your heart, your mind, and your every action. It’s costly. It’s demanding. And it is exactly what Jesus commanded.

Discipleship is a call text over a red overlay that is over a picture of a highway that leads to a giant cross at the end with light at the end.

The Cost of Following Jesus

Jesus said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23) Daily. Not when it’s convenient. Not when it feels comfortable. Discipleship demands surrender. It demands obedience. It demands transformation. It’s stepping off the sidelines and committing to a life that’s bigger than you — a life that shapes others and advances the mission of Christ in the world.

From Knowledge to Obedience

Being a disciple means more than just knowing Scripture or memorizing verses. As James reminds us, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22). Knowledge without action is empty. True discipleship is lived out in your choices, your conversations, your work, your family, and your friendships. It means letting God’s truth reshape your comfort zones, your priorities, and your identity.

Discipleship Happens in Community

But discipleship is not meant to happen alone. Growth unfolds in community — walking alongside others who speak truth into your life, who challenge you to grow, and who help keep you faithful on the path of obedience. Discipleship is relational and purposeful, not isolated or casual. It’s a movement, not a solo journey.

The Mission: Disciples Who Make Disciples

And its ultimate aim? Multiplication. Disciples making disciples. Taking the Gospel into every corner of life and every sphere of influence. This is the commission Jesus gave to His followers: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:19‑20).

This is not casual Christianity. It’s not a check‑the‑box religion. It’s spiritual warfare against complacency, against the pull of self, against anything that would keep God from being first in your life. It’s messy. It’s hard. It’s beautiful. And it’s the only way to live the life you were created for — the life Jesus died to give you.

Discipleship at Rock Church Soulard

At Rock Church Soulard, we believe in discipleship that looks like this: personal transformation that leads to obedience, community that sharpens and strengthens, and faith put into action in the everyday. Our hope is to walk with people as they become disciples who make disciples — people who follow Jesus with courage, obedience, and Kingdom purpose.
