Kingdom Surrender: Accountability
“Is accountability the same thing as control?”
“My pastor is supposed to love me, not judge me. Right?”
“Besides, my spiritual leaders don’t really know me like that. They have no right to critique my life choices. Jesus knows my heart.”
These thoughts may sound familiar, but they raise an important question: What does biblical accountability actually look like?
Accountability is not control. Control manipulates and dominates, but biblical accountability lovingly points us back to God’s Word and encourages spiritual growth within the Body of Christ.
In Lesson 4 of the Kingdom Surrender series, Paztuh Mike Wuebbles explores the biblical foundation and practical reality of accountability in the Church. The secular world recognizes the value of accountability through leadership programs, self-help seminars, and personal-development resources. Yet when we enter the Church, we can sometimes resist the very principle we embrace elsewhere.
If we profess to follow Jesus, we should be willing to receive loving, Scripture-based correction from healthy church leadership and trusted members of the Body of Christ. This does not mean surrendering our conscience, tolerating abuse, or following anyone blindly. It means allowing a godly community to help us remain faithful to God’s Word.
The Apostle Paul writes:
“Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord’s work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.”
Jesus also warned against calling Him Lord while refusing to follow His instructions:
“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?”
True repentance is more than saying “I’m sorry.” It involves turning back to God and allowing Him to transform the way we live. Spiritual growth was never meant to happen in isolation. God uses a healthy Christian community to encourage, challenge, and strengthen us.
Are you willing to be accountable to God’s Word, even when it challenges you?
Are you willing to receive loving, biblical correction from mature believers?
Are you willing to surrender to healthy church leadership where God has planted you?
And if accountability is difficult for you, are you willing to ask God to prepare your heart?
