Milk or Meat? Unity Sermon

Kingdom Unity: Kingdom Government -

Does God even care about the government? Does He believe in one?

If you were raised in a Westernized nation like the United States, you probably view God, Jesus, the Bible, and even what it means to be a Christian through the lens of a democracy or republic. In these systems, leadership and laws are voted on. You get to share your opinion—casting a vote on who and what rules your life.

But the Kingdom of God doesn’t work like that. Isaiah 9:7 (NLT) prophecies about Jesus and the coming Kingdom: “His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!”

In Lesson 2 of the series Kingdom Unity, Paztuh Mike Wuebbles dives into what God’s government really looks like according to Scripture. He explains how the Kingdom operates, what Jesus’ eternal role is within it, and how God’s laws apply to us today.

If you’re a Christian, please consider this:

Is Jesus your King or your president?

Are His words mandatory for your life—or suggestions you can follow when convenient?

Kingdom Government: Choosing Eternal Unity Over Earthly Division

Introduction

  • The True Meaning of Repentance: Repentance goes beyond simply saying "I'm sorry" to God; it requires a literal change in direction and a complete shift in our minds and hearts regarding how we live.

  • Redefining Government: We often falsely believe God and government do not mix. However, the Kingdom of God is a literal government, functioning with its own unchangeable policies and decrees.

  • Unlearning Democratic Lenses: Because we are conditioned by American democracy, we unconsciously read the Bible as if God's laws are subject to a vote, rather than absolute kingdom decrees.

As we shift our mindset from earthly democracy to divine authority, we begin to recognize the prophetic reality of who is truly in charge.

"Jesus is the king of the government of which we are under. Not our president... Nobody voted for Jesus to be the king... So you can't vote him in. Well, if you can't vote him in, guess what? You can't vote him out."

1. The Eternal Kingdom Will Outlast Earthly Empires

  • Prophetic Foundations (Daniel 2:44): The vision of Nebuchadnezzar's statue reveals that all earthly kingdoms will rise and fall, but the God of heaven will set up a Kingdom that will crush the others and stand forever.

  • The Perfect Ruler (Isaiah 9:6-7): Prophecy dictates that Jesus's government and peace will never end. He will rule with ultimate fairness and justice from the throne of David for all eternity.

  • The Illusion of Earthly Permanence: Superpowers and nations of this world are temporary. Believers must prepare their minds for an eternal reality rather than living strictly for the fleeting, present timeline.

Recognizing that the King's word is final requires us to radically rethink our relationship with His established laws.

2. The Purpose and Postponement of God's Law

  • The Goodness of God's Law (Romans 7:12 & Romans 3:31): Modern culture twists Paul's words to claim God's law is bad or abolished. Conversely, Paul clearly states the law is holy, righteous, and good, and that our faith upholds the law.

  • Twisting Scripture (1 Timothy 1:8 & 2 Peter 3:15-16): Peter warned that the ignorant and unstable twist Paul’s teachings to their own destruction, using grace as an excuse for disobedience rather than realizing the law is good when used lawfully.

  • Fulfilling, Not Abolishing (Matthew 5:17-19): Jesus explicitly taught that He did not come to abolish the law, warning that whoever ignores the least commandment and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the Kingdom.

  • Empowered by Grace (Romans 6:14): Being "under grace" does not mean we have freedom to willingly sin; rather, having Christ within us provides the power to overcome sin's dominion over our lives.

  • Delayed Enforcement and Free Will (John 8): Earthly governments enforce laws immediately, but Jesus delayed the enforcement of God's law until Judgment Day. This is illustrated when He spared the woman caught in adultery from immediate stoning, yet commanded her to "go and sin no more."

  • Willing Obedience (Hebrews 8:10 & Isaiah 1:19): In the New Covenant (prophesied in Jeremiah), God writes His laws on our minds and hearts so that we eat the good of the land by obeying Him willingly out of love, not out of the fear of punishment.

When we willingly submit to His laws out of love, it completely changes how we interact with the temporary political systems around us.

"In a kingdom, when a king gives a command, it is not a suggestion. Never."

3. Political Idolatry vs. Kingdom Unity

  • The Authority of a King's Decree (Daniel 6): When King Darius spoke a decree, it did not pass through a congress; it became absolute law. Similarly, when Jesus speaks, it is law, requiring us to fully renounce our own will.

  • The Trap of Political Division: Earthly political ideologies—whether Democrat, Republican, or Independent—actively divide believers, causing them to fight and sever relationships over imperfect human leaders.

  • The Longing for a Perfect Ruler: The intense passion people project onto flawed political candidates is misplaced; it stems from a God-given, internal longing for the return of the perfect ruler, Jesus Christ.

  • A Higher Citizenship (John 3:3): Just as you are born into an earthly nation without a choice, Jesus told Nicodemus that unless you are "born again," you cannot even see the Kingdom of God. Our primary identity must be our Kingdom citizenship.

If we truly want to walk together in power, we must leave behind the temporary labels that separate us and step fully into our true citizenship.

Conclusion

  • Renouncing Our Own Will: Accepting Jesus as Lord means laying down our personal will, preferences, and earthly agendas to adopt His Kingdom decrees.

  • The Fire of Judgment Day: Earthly political systems and ideologies will not survive the ultimate judgment; we must anchor our lives to the eternal Kingdom.

  • A Call to Kingdom Unity: True unity is only possible when believers stop fighting on the world's playing field and align their hearts completely with the Constitution of Heaven—the Word of God.

Now that we've explored the authority of God's government and the laws of His Kingdom, take some time to personally evaluate your own allegiance with these application questions.

Reflection & Discussion Questions

  1. In what ways have you unknowingly viewed God's Kingdom through the lens of a democracy, acting as if His commands are open for a vote or debate?

  2. Read Matthew 5:17-19 and Hebrews 8:10. Does your obedience to God currently stem more from a fear of punishment or from a deep, willing love with His laws written on your heart?

  3. How much of your identity and emotional energy is tied up in earthly politics compared to your citizenship in the Kingdom of Heaven?

  4. What specific earthly ideologies, political labels, or personal preferences do you need to renounce this week to walk in true unity with your fellow believers?
