Kingdom Culture and Our Core Values @ Rock Church Soulard

As much as each local church has a different culture and feel, the underlying principles and foundation must be based on the Word of God. A church’s core values are the building blocks that both define and should reflect that culture. The Leadership at Rock Church Soulard and the entire body of Believers in the congregation must know, understand, and endeavor to embody these five principles in their daily lives. What we believe is reflected by how we live, both inside and outside the four-walls of the Soulard church building.

#1 - Change: My past is not my future; I refuse to stay the same.

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

We are always, always welcome to come to God as we are; but we are not allowed to stay as we are. Once you are truly born again, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you. Because of Jesus’ death and resurrection, God’s grace empowers you actually think and behave like a totally new person. Through the surrender of your own will to embrace God’s will, you will start to think, talk, and walk like the new creation you are in Christ. But this is still a daily choice, to die to self and live for Him. At Rock Church Soulard we embrace radical change, because we know it’s truly possible with Him.

#2 - Relationships: I intentionally connect with the people God places in my circle of influence.

“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

A Western mindset is individualistic. The American Dream teaches us to focus on that anything is possible for me. We have families, we have friends, but the focus is self above all else. Go after your dreams, no matter what it costs. It’s self-absorbed and self-focused. In the Kingdom of God, we are called to community. We are commanded to put others before ourselves. No Believer can give their full attention to every single individual they meet, but each Believer is commanded to connect with people God has placed in their lives. As Christians, we are not to avoid people, even when our comfort zone is screaming otherwise. At Rock Church Soulard, we embrace the relationships and people that God has called us to reach, influence, and love.

#3 - Love: I walk in obedience to God with a willing heart and mind.

“But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees with his reply, they met together to question him again. One of them, an expert in religious law, tried to trap him with this question: “Teacher, which is the most important commandment in the law of Moses?” Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.”

What is love? How do we define it? The World says love is love. The Scriptures say that God is love. If God is love, as a Believer, our perspective and view of love should be the same as God’s; which we can find and know from His Word. Without knowing Jesus, without embracing the Truth, the love we walk in will be worldly, not Godly. First and foremost, we must keep God first and what He says. Only then, can we properly love others. A worldly love puts others first, and God second. This easily makes you able to define love however you want, making people and self your “god”. At Rock Church Soulard, we embrace the real love of God founded on uncompromising Truth, not feelings.

#4 - Unity: I strive to remain in full agreement with God’s will for my life - spirit, soul, and body.

“I appeal to you, dear brothers and sisters, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, to live in harmony with each other. Let there be no divisions in the church. Rather, be of one mind, united in thought and purpose.”

Real, authentic unity is not faked or forced, but built. Our personal unity in our relationship with God and unity with other people is absolutely vital. When strife and division come and are allowed to stay, everyone knows it. Disunity is painfully obvious. Unity starts in the mind and is born through sacrifice as we live, work, and minister together. It involves seeing the immaturity and faults of people, while choosing to love and respect them anyway. At Rock Church Soulard, we embrace the absolute need for unity, despite how messy and unpredictable we can be as human beings.

#5 - Accountability: I welcome the challenge of being held responsible for my lifestyle - words, actions, and attitudes.

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”

When you sharpen a knife, friction happens, sparks fly. There is a great clash and confrontation when what’s dull, encounters what’s sharp and effective. Growth never happens in comfort - ever. It never will. In the Kingdom of God, it is by design for us to live in a community; being truly held accountable by other brothers and sisters in Christ. When we isolate ourselves and try to hide from the truth, all personal and spiritual development stops. At Rock Church Soulard, we embrace accountability from the Leadership and this community of Believers.
